Clean stone walls can be a fantastic way of decorating your interiors. However, more and more people decide on adding other ornamental pieces to spice up the space even more. But what to hang on a stone wall and how to make sure that you don't cause damage to the surface in the process? Let's find out!
Stone is a much different material than traditional plaster or drywall. Simply hammering a couple of nails into it won’t do the trick, especially if you want to mount something heavier than just a little picture. That is why you need to be extra careful when installing decorative pieces on the stone. Of course, make sure that you carefully choose the place where you plan to hang the TV or decorations as it will be extremely difficult to cover the holes entirely later on.
Let’s start with one of the most popular questions - how to install a TV on a stone wall? Mounting a flat screen on a beautiful stone surface in the living room or a bedroom is a wildly common idea. But before you start on it, you should gather proper tools such as a drill, a masonry bit, wall anchors, screw, hanging hook and safety goggles. Choose a spot where you will drill. If it is possible, go for an area between two tiles as the mortar is much easier to penetrate. You can even repair it if you decide to remove the pieces from the wall.
Once you have a drilled hole, insert an anchor inside and make sure it sits snugly. For pieces under 9 kilos, you can use plastic versions. But if you’re installing heavier items, go for metal anchors. Then it’s time to drill in a screw. Remember to choose a model that is a size smaller than the anchor itself, so it fits tightly. If you’re hanging a picture, you can leave the head of the screw sticking out from the wall. But if you’re installing something heavier, then place the hanging hook over the hole before you add and secure the screw.
The solution we mentioned above is foolproof when mounting most of the pieces, but some people will still wonder how to hang a picture on a decorative stone without damaging its surface. It’s possible, and you can even use two methods, such as command strips and brick clips. Everything will depend on the type of stone placed on your wall. In some types of finishes, small stone tiles are divided by mortar, and this is where brick clips will come in handy. You can attach them, so they hold onto the one stone tile and offer hanging hooks on their backs. In other scenarios, you will have huge slabs of stone mounted on the wall - this is where you may want to try command strips first, especially if you’re hanging items that won’t weigh much.
