Deciding on a beautiful natural stone cladding - whether it is inside or outside the building - is a great idea. Why? Because this material is known for its unparalleled durability and can withstand years of use. And it ages really gracefully so you won’t have to replace it anytime soon. But of course, the state of your stone cladding will also depend on the way your caring for it. So how to clean stone wall cladding, so it can serve you for many years to come? Let’s find out.

How to prepare stone cladding?

Large porosity, harsh weather conditions and susceptibility to water absorption - these features make stone age faster and can lead to the creation of lasting stains. That is why one of the most important parts of caring for stone is its impregnation. Both internal and external stone cladding should undergo this treatment so it can be protected from dampness and the grime beforehand. But what about cleaning stone afterwards?

How to clean stone wall cladding?

It’s important to remember that various stones have different properties, so the cleaning method should be adapted to the type of stone.
  • Sandstone should be washed with a sponge and a mild cleaning agent. We should avoid hard brushes and harsh chemicals.
  • Limestone absorbs water quickly and is prone to stains, so any spots should be washed immediately with mild and acid-free detergents.
  • Travertine can be cleaned with delicate cleaning agents, and more difficult stains can be removed with special cleaning chemicals for stone and cladding.
  • Granite can be washed with universal cleaning agents, and more prominent impurities can be cleaned with extraction gasoline.
  • Marble can be cleaned with a dishwashing liquid diluted in water and a soft cloth, so we don’t cause any scratches. We should avoid hard brushes and acidic detergents.
The strength of the detergent will depend on the level of stains. If the stone is only mildly dirty, all you should need is water with a mild detergent and a sponge. Of course, we have to remember that stone cladding inside the house will gather way less dirt and dust than the one outside the building. Therefore, the method of cleaning and used detergents can be more gentle and less invasive. Outside stone cladding can be cleaned by high-pressure washers that help to remove sediment, dust and dirt with a stream of water or steam. You can also add to them special store-bought cleaning chemicals for stone and cladding.
